On Monday 20th June 2011, the Association of Jersey Architects (AJA), in partnership with the Planning & Environment Department, launched a weeklong event to showcase the best of Jersey architecture. The theme this year was the ‘Value of Good Design’ and included high profile keynote speakers, free planning surgeries for the public, open building tours, exhibitions in Liberty Wharf, a schools design competition and the Jersey Design Awards, which recognise and celebrate the work of local architects.

Throughout the week, people visited Liberty Wharf to see 3D models of local buildings, to view the award submissions for the Design Awards and the fantastic ‘Reach for the skies’ school competition entries. All of the islands secondary schools and many primary ones took part in challenge to build a skyscraper from just one copy of newspaper, with fantastic and creative results – (for winners see notes below).

Many people also took the opportunity for the pubic to view the new Ogier and Energy from Waste buildings for the first time, as well as the Jersey Archive, and the week rounded off with the winners of the Jersey Architecture Design Awards being announced.

Paul Harding, President of the AJA commented,

“We are absolutely delighted with the level of interest and support we have received this week. I would like to thank the local public for showing up and taking such a positive interest in our work, our sponsors, and the members of the AJA committee who worked tirelessly to make this event happen.”

Speaking at the launch of the event, and again at the Jersey Architecture Design Awards at the end of the week, which also saw the Island Plan debated, Senator Freddie Cohen, Planning and Environment Minister, summed up the general feeling, saying,

“Jersey Architects are delivering – and I really mean this – buildings on a par with the best in Europe”.

Jersey Architecture Week 2011 (AW11), running from 20th to 25th June, has now announced it’s full and innovative programme, which will include speakers, open building tours, competitions, exhibitions, planning surgeries, as well as the Jersey Architectural Design Awards. All of the events are free to the public, and any proceeds made will be donated to support educational and charitable causes.

On Monday the 20th June at Liberty Wharf, AW11 will officially be opened by AJA President Paul Harding, with a keynote speech to mark the start of the week’s activity.

A series of Talks and Planning Surgeries will then form part of the week’s programme, allowing people to learn about subjects of relevance to architecture in island communities, as well as to get advice about their own design and planning issues. The Open Building Tours will allow the public to see the inside of locally designed buildings, such as the new Ogier development, the Energy from Waste building and the Jersey Archive.

The AJA have also launched a competition entitled, ‘Reach for the skies!’, where children from various local schools will have a chance to have their entries displayed and win prizes for building the best skyscraper. Sponsored by the Jersey Evening post (JEP), the competition rules require that only one copy of the JEP must be used to make the model.

Various exhibitions will be shown in Liberty Wharf during this week, including a sample of AJA members building models, to allow members of the public a chance to see 3D designs of real-life designs and Jersey developments. The shortlisted entries from the Jersey Architectural Design Awards will also be showcased in Liberty Wharf during this week, culminating in the final awards evening on Friday the 24th, to be held at Jersey Arts Centre. This event is independently organised and judged by Jersey Architecture Commission, and tickets are available from the Planning Department.
