Winners Presentation

This year the competition is simple - to construct a tower of the teams own design, constructed to a height of their choosing in order to suspend a small platform that can hold a 200 gramme dairy milk chocolate bar. The winner of the competition will be the tower that can support the weight of the chocolate bar at the highest level above floor level without collapsing.

Teams will consist of 1 - 6 pupils.

Teams will have the opportunity to prepare and test out ideas before the day, but construction of the model tower will only take place in the area on the day of the competition.

Specifications:

The base of the tower can be no larger one complete page of the newspaper, it must be constructed off the floor and only of recycled Jersey Evening Post newspapers. The tower has to support a platform sized to contain a 200 gramme bar of dairy milk chocolate. The platform must be and remain clearly off the ground, as high as possible suspended from the tower in the air.

Materials:

In the spirit of recycling and reuse of materials, this competition aims to reuse materials.

Please ask the teams to collect and save the following to test ideas, and to then bring along to the competition workshop.

Four copies of the JEP newspaper
Four metres of string
(to be provided at the competition) One roll of masking tape (to be provided at the competition)

The competition will be split into two categories, one for Primary School Pupils and one for Secondary School Pupils

Categories:
Category A Primary Schools
Category B Secondary Schools
All age groups will utilise the same materials for the design of their model towers.

Judging Committee:

Judged by a group of at least four. President of the Jersey Association of Architects Representative of the Jersey Structural Engineers Representative of Romerils as our event Sponsor Special Guest connected with the Arts and Education

Assisting Participants:

Education Staff/Team’s respective teachers /Construction professionals including Architects / Structural Engineers and Construction Professionals
will be on hand to assist the competition teams with the task, providing advice.

Judging Criteria:

It’s simple really, once loaded with the chocolate bar the tower has to remain in place with the chocolate bar remaining on the platform, it will then be measured from the floor to the underside of the platform.

The tower that supports the chocolate bar at the highest level above the floor whilst still being fully intact will be the winner.
If however the tower buckles or the chocolate bar falls out then the tower will have failed.

But.....As we are all big kids really, what we really want to do, is test the towers to destruction, so once we have established the winning tower we will apply a further loading of the towers for the ‘ultimate test’ - which tower can hold the most chocolate bars before collapsing. There will be an additional prize in each category available for the tower thats supports the most bars of chocolate!

Location:

Le Rocquier School have kindly offered their hall as the venue for this years competition. Any one who participated in last years bridge building event in the town hall will have enjoyed the atmosphere and creativity of the event, this year we will have a little more space.

So put the date in the diary 07th December 2018 at 2.00pm to 5.00pm at Le Rocquier School, St Clements.

Prizes sponsored by Romerils:

Presentation of a BIG Cheque to the winning Schools / Book tokens to the individual students Category A Primary Schools Total £500.00
