AD19 Natasha Day talk: Healthy Environments for Healthier Communities

Natasha Day, Policy Principal (Senior Planner) at the Government of Jersey will be talking about place making: healthy environments for healthier communities

From the garden cities movement of the early 20th century through to the emerging 2021 Island Plan, Natasha will talk about how planning and place-making is key in supporting healthy environments for healthier communities.

The session will cover some of the Government of Jersey’s work to understand the supply and demand for high quality open and green spaces and how this could translate into new planning policy for the next decade.

The talk will highlight how beyond government, islanders, businesses and third sector groups are able to significantly influence how we all see and interact with the Island environment.

Mark Brandon has been building up the name for Solar technology with his family owned company SunWorks over the last 7 years and has worked in a variety of projects from powering-up off grid- scout huts at Crabbe, to bespoke high-net-worth new builds and everything in between.

AD19 Stuart Fell walkabout: From Square to Cross

Stuart Fell will be leading a 45min walkabout entitled "From Square to Cross - A sense of Place in the heart of St Helier".

The walkabout will start promptly at 12:05 and finish at 12:50 at Charing Cross.

The theme - how the architecture of the town centre has evolved and adapted over the last 300 years and, as a living organism, reflects a continuing sense of well-being and prosperity.

AD19 Simon Crowcroft panel discussion: Town Trees & Well Being

The Constable of St Helier, Simon Crowcroft, will chair a panel discussion entitled Town Trees & Well Being, on the role trees play in making St Helier the vibrant capital of the Island which it is, and how much more could be done to green St Helier.

Nigel Quérée - Norman Limited

Nigel was born and educated in Jersey. After graduating from the University, Nigel returned to Jersey and started a career in IT at Norman Limited. Nigel joined the board in 1989 and worked in a number of executive roles in the business until semi-retiring in 2017; he continues to provide part-time IT support. Elected to the States in 1990; Nigel was President of Planning and Environment from 1997 to 2002 introducing a new Planning Law and Island Plan. Married to Judith, Nigel has two grown-up children, and now spends more time looking after their house and the gardens which are open to visitors. A current project is recording all the species found in the gardens and surrounding meadows.

Dr Dominic Clyde-Smith - Sustainability & Resilience expert

Dominic is a Doctorate of urban resilience and sustainability. He specialises in biophilia and the design of green infrastructure; with a focus on improving health and wellbeing in the built environment. Dominic heads We Design For… Jersey branch, their research team and is an associate researcher at UCL. We Design For… is an innovative engineering consultancy that seeks to balance social, health, wellbeing, energy and environmental factors and put the human liveability element back into design. Dominic’s research looks to nature to find sustainable solutions to improve the synergies for the water, food and energy Nexus. His research investigated the role of hydroponics, as a social innovation, to develop ecological systems that mine nutrients from waste streams, to produce value crops as well as mitigate other urban concerns i.e. air quality or storm runoff but also improving the health and wellbeing of the urban realm.

Ursula Kochanowska - Landscape Architect at Waddington Landscape

Having graduated with master degree in Landscape Architecture and previously worked in other European practises, Urszula moved to Jersey in 2008 and has been working in the profession since then (currently running Waddington Landscape). She is a fully Charted Member of the Landscape Institute (London branch) and has over 10 years of experience in tree planting and specification as well as listed trees protection (under TPO), using the latest innovations and products on the market. Urszula is campaigning to influence the new Island Plan to include Landscape and Visual Character Assessments, and promote better quality landscape design and urban greening in Jersey.

Adele Huelin is a Jersey based MArch student carried out Community Engagement workshops in a number of Youth Centres in Jersey, as a means to explore a brief for a potential Youth Wellness Centre.

The presentation will cover:

1. Community Engagement intro

2. Others work in Participation - how architects use participation to build a brief

3. Workshops in Youth Centres - methods and learning

4. Outcome - How to translate this information into a brief for a building

5. The Brief - a Youth Wellness Centre at Fort Regent (focusing on sustainability)

6. How buildings affect our wellbeing - healthy buildings & environments
