AJA University Student Comp 2023

The AJA University Student Comp 2023 titled Re-Use / Re-Play saw a suite of great entries submitted this summer. Each student had a chance to re interpret their years work through the lens of Re-use in architecture. How they chose to interpret the idea of Re-Use was entirely up to them.

The winning prize was awarded to Sammie Pitter and there were two runner up awards for Grant Donaldson and Tom Baker.

Well done to the winners and thank you to all who entered!

Winner : Sammie Pitter
The Athens Assembly

Notes from the Judging Panel
The panel appreciated the multiple ways Sammi articulated the idea of Re-Use both materially and symbolically. It was interesting to see how these strategies affected the architecture, structurally with the rammed earth walls, re using soil excavated from the site, and programmatically through the practice of historic athenian political techniques. The perspectival section showed a strong level of control and clarity.

Runner Up : Grant Donaldson
Changing rooms

Notes from the Judging Panel
The panel appreciated the projects original take on the brief, examining the power of the user to potentially re-purpose an existing space through their behaviour. Augmented with lightweight apparatus and movable street furniture Grant opened up the possibilities for how we can re-use space to better serve a wider community. The presented images were also very nicely composed.

Runner Up : Tom Baker
Housing to Build Community

Notes from the Judging Panel
The panel appreciated the explicit strategy of re-using a brownfield site to create a self sustaining cluster of housing units with shared facilities and a surrounding landscape of small holdings. The sense that the land could pulse with the seasons to be sustainably farmed year after year to provide for a community added a further dimension to the topic of Re-Use. The combination of drawings and models was also well received.
